Employment Standards in BC and Alberta

As a founding member of The Coalition of BC Businesses, Shelfspace has been successful in bringing about several changes to employment standards benefitting retailers in BC. These changes have made the Employment Standards Act more flexible and less costly for retailers. The Coalition, which was formed in 1992 to represent small and medium-sized businesses in the progress of British Columbia's labour and employment policies, is seeking further changes to the act. The Coalition consists of organizations that jointly represent over 50,000 businesses active in BC's communities. The Coalition's focus is the development of labour policies that will help promote positive relationships among employers and employees. The coalition has proposed several changes to the employment standards that will affect the way BC retailers do business.

A comparison of existing standards in BC and AB as well as the proposed changes are detailed below:

Overtime

> 40 hrs/wk must be paid time-and-a-half after 40 hours.

Calculation is based on hours worked in a day and in a week

Calculation for overtime for commissioned salespeople to be based on gross earnings over a four week period.

> 8hrs/ day or >44 hrs/week

Calculation is based on a daily and weekly basis, whichever is higher.

Holidays

An employee must:

Be employed >30 calendar days prior to the holiday

and

Have worked or earned wages on 15/30 days prior to the holiday

An employer and a majority of employees can agree to substitute another day off for a statutory holiday.

Be employed >90 calendar days prior to the holiday

The qualifying conditions the scheduled day before and after the holiday should be introduced.

Must work for the same employer for 30 working days in the 12 months preceding the holiday.

An eligible employee is entitled to a day off with pay when the holiday falls on a day that is normally a working day.

LiveSmart BC Small Business Program

Shelfspace is pleased to announce its participation in the LiveSmart BC Small Business program. Shelfspace will assist retailers in reducing energy consumption and waste by providing free energy assessments of their locations and coordinating funding for installations saving retailers valuable time, money and energy!

As part of the program Shelfspace is hiring a Retail Energy Advisor to join our team.

Role:

  • Responsible for identifying, educating, assessing and coordinating with retailers on the LiveSmart BC Small Business program to Shelfspace members and the retail community.
  • Brand ambassador for Shelfspace

Purpose:

  • To administer and coordinate the LiveSmart program within the Shelfspace community
  • To educate the Shelfspace community on energy conservation and ways to implement
  • To achieve target number of contacts, audits and direct installations by April 2012.
