Mark Startup is the President and CEO of Shelfspace. After dedicating many years to representing, supporting and speaking on behalf of retailers, Mark is now recognized as a respected and knowledgeable representative of the retail community.

In 1982, Mark joined Shelfspace (formerly Retail BC, Retail Alberta and Retail Merchants’ Association of British Columbia) as General Manager. In 1985, he was appointed President and in 1995 he was named President and CEO.

Mark is the Past-Chair of the Coalition of BC Businesses, the organization which speaks for 30 associations representing over 50,000 small and medium-sized businesses on employment and labour policy issues in BC. He has been recently appointed to the Small Business Round Table and is also a member of the Fair Tax Coalition.

Shelfspace’s President and CEO began his career in retailing with Eaton’s in Vancouver as Advertising, Merchandising Supervisor for Eaton’s BC and Alberta stores. He completed the Eaton’s management training program in 1979. In 1980, Mark joined the Canadian Federation of Independent Business as District Manager where he gained extensive experience working with small and medium-sized businesses.

Mark is also a member of the Rotary Club of Vancouver, and is the Past-President of the Canadian Society of Association Executives (BC chapter). Mark received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario. In 1987, he was designated a Certified Association Executive (CAE) by the Canadian Society of Association Executives.

After 27 years with the organization, and through many victories and changes within the industry, Mark is still as passionate and dedicated to representing Western Canada's retailers as ever. He is a proud and active voice of the industry and is leading Shelfspace in new and exciting direction.
