How Dai got into retail:

My foray into retail was rather happenstance.  While going to school full-time I needed a job and so I started working various retail positions to make ends meet – I was a video store clerk, coffee shop barista, then a greeter at the GAP during Christmas season (if you want a glimpse of hell, definitely try this).  Eventually my passion for health and fitness took me to a specialty fitness store to buy a heavy bag.  I was offered a job on the spot and the rest as they say, “is history”.   

The best thing about retail?

Its dynamic nature (there’s never a dull moment).  It quite simply is organized chaos at its finest where each day presents a new opportunity to help someone with a problem and provide them a solution unique to their situation.  I couldn’t imagine ever being in a different industry other than retail.

What does Shelfspace mean to Dai?

Shelfspace, the association for retail entrepreneurs, is the hub within our industry sector.  To me it’s a place where retailers can exchange ideas freely, network with one another, as well as align themselves to force change by way of lobbying and focused social media.   

What’s one thing Dai would like you to know about him?

My competitive nature will never allow me to settle for 2nd place.  In the words of Dale Earnhardt, “Second Place is just the first place loser”.

A bit about Dai: 

Raised in Bowmanville, Ontario, Dai now lives with his 2 children and loving wife, Christie, in Surrey, B.C.  Dai is also an active member and Vice President Public Relations for the Whiterock Early Edition Toastmasters organization as well as an area governor for Toastmasters District 21.  When not honing his public speaking abilities, he spends time volunteering with various non-profit organizations like Salvation Army and the Langley Lions Club.  As the editor of the Fitness Town Health & Wellness Blog and The Moose is Loose, Dai lives out his passion for writing and sharing best health and fitness practices.
